After a long time (indeed), I attended a session on a techy topic. And I was not disappointed. I have to confess that I sink into a stupor 10 min into the session if it’s not interesting enough – one of the demerits of having “grown-up” is becoming very choosy, and that includes what to listen to as well :). The guy who undertook the session was not only knowledgeable but also skilled in communicating his ideas and concepts. True, he did not stick to the guidelines mentioned but he made the session more interesting with this enthusiasm. It was evident that he enjoyed what he indulged in.
What irritated me was the condescending attitude of some participants. Even though the instructor was skilled enough, apparently his command over English was not that good. His accent was laced with MTI – Mother Tongue Influence – and he got mixed up with his tenses. So what? The moot point was – he managed to communicate.....he still managed to deliver.
But apparently, it was not enough for thse narrow-minded people who made it a point to sneer whenever they encountered a fault in his speech. So much for being “educated” and “broad-minded”.....sigh. Kudos to the instructor who managed to ignore them .......
What if one’s English is not good? What if one’s sense of dressing is a bit gaudy? What if one’s gauche enough to blurt out some personal details? Should these details stop you from getting to know that individual better?
There may be gold beneath the grime.....you may never know if you are not curious enough to dig.

But, I have to say, MTI can be really funny and/or non-comprehendable at times!!

Howdu...but if that person having MTI also takes it in a humourous vein, one can laugh along with that person rather than at that person :D!!
Hey good one... as long as the person is not obnoxious or wicked ;), there is always something lurking behind the unwelcoming exterior :)
And oh, if MTI is much too much, to the extent that you cannot even understand what s/he is saying, then it definitely is a problem :)
Good you enjoyed a techy session - very rarely can we find instructors who can make a tends-to-doze-off person praise him ;)

Chitra, i truly agree with you. We Indians laugh at our english if it has MTI , but give a patient hearing to Ameircans or other foreigners saying it is their accent. Why do we not understand, that for most of us Indians, English is the second language, no matter we may write well, we dont talk that language at home.
In todays world, people are judged by what you wear and how you present, as they do not have the time to know the other person.

Hmm...some people are born to criticise. But it depends on us as to how constructively we can take it. I believe that if we have to change, it should be for the better.
Hyuck hyuck....I wish I could prove that I do not have an MTI... though quite some people have confused me for a Mallu :)! Have to write a post on that...:D
