Poda...

Thanks to Anu and Aki, I know a smattering of Tamizh (I hope that I got that correct). And I end up using some of them at my best friend at work aka my PC, especially when that guy hangs himself (now.... I wonder why) !! And the most common word used is poda – loosely meaning ‘go da’. And in case you get a mental image of a lady ranting at her computer with words like goobe, dabba PC, katte, koti etc, go ahead and have a belly-laugh at my expense!

I never even remotely dreamt (err..... does the word ‘nightmared’ exist?) that the consequences would be this far-fetched.

Var gets curious once in while to know the meaning of all these ‘strange’ words which I use. In turn, he passes on all my ‘preachings’ his wife. Given the rate at which I swear, it’s quite difficult for Var, let alone his wife, to assimilate all these words. So, it did not come as a surprise when I came to know about the following incident:

It seems Var’s wife, D, got into a tiff with a vegetable vendor over the price of some tomatoes (or was it brinjals?). Khair..... that guy did not know Hindi and this lady was new to Kannada. He kept on repeating his price in Kannada while she stood at her price in Hindi. Finally, she got frustrated and flounced off, but not before shocking the vendor with a ‘poda’.

My only response – I wish I was a witness to this incident. I would not have missed that guy’s expression for being lambasted for no reason at all.

Var’s counter-response – Tum kab sudrogi? Don't you feel even a twinge of remorse?

Hmmmm... should I sudhrify? :) :)

The slur is better when you say "po da vennai':)but while men are ok with being called po da etc some women i know dont like the po di slur.. they think its derogatory!
